Effect: A new color-changing coin effect where a coin visibly changes from silver to copper
by pushing the coin between your fingers. You actually see the coin with half the coin being
silver and the other half being copper. After the color change,
the now copper coin may be handed out for examination.
History: In 1978 I was hired to perform a three-hour close-up show in Detroit, Michigan.
I had more than enough material to do the show, however, I could not find my Expanded Fifty-Cent Shell Coin
that was an integral prop in a few of my routines. After a few days of futile searching, I decided to buy a
new one. I phoned magic dealer Paul Diamond and asked if he would rush one out to me, he did. When my package
arrived via UPS, I found that not only was the package badly damaged but half of the coin was damaged as well.
Actually half of the coin was crushed. My first thought was to make a claim with UPS; however, I did not have
months or years to wait for a UPS refund. I needed a new coin, so I simply ordered another Expanded Shell coin
from Paul with instructions for him to ship it U.S. Mail. I received my second package a few days later,
just in time for my close-up show.
As is evidenced by my vast collection of stuff, I am not one to throw anything away, especially something that
I paid good money for! It is for that reason that I picked up the broken shell and started to experiment with it.
I had nothing in particular in mind; I just knew that I didn't want to throw it away. My first thought was to file
away the crushed section of shell because it was only the milled edges that were crushed. As I was filing the
broken edges off of the shell, the thought of cutting the whole shell in half dawned on me.
I immediately saw the possibilities and Exchange Rate was born.
